The Italian Furniture Manufacturer Embracing Innovation and Sustainability

The Innovative World of Mara
Italian manufacturer Mara is renowned for its commitment to innovation and sustainability. With its headquarters located in Brescia, a city in the heart of Italy, the company has maintained its local production and supply chains, ensuring that every aspect of its business is under its control.

From R&D to Manufacturing

Mara’s story began in 1960 when its founder, Camillo Marchina, established the company. Since then, the family-run business has grown and evolved, with its current managing director, Laura Marchina, leading the way. The company’s design-first strategy has led to collaborations with prominent designers such as Michele De Lucchi, Ferruccio Laviani, Christophe Pillet, and Marcello Zilian. Mara’s commitment to controlling its industrial process has resulted in a reduction in costs and a more sustainable approach to manufacturing.

This enables the company to produce high-quality products with precision and speed. The company’s commitment to local sourcing has also ensured that all materials are sourced from the local area, reducing transportation costs and minimizing the company’s carbon footprint.

Mara’s expertise in working with metal has led to the creation of innovative and durable products. The company’s technicians are skilled in metalworking, and their passion for their craft is evident in every product they produce. The company’s use of metal tubes and sheets has resulted in products that are both light and durable, with minimal material usage.

With its focus on design, functionality, and well-being, Mara is poised to continue its success in the years to come. Whether you’re a design professional or a consumer looking for high-quality furniture, Mara is a company that is worth considering. As I’m shown a box containing small metal pins that are deployed during the production process but which are later discarded (recycled, naturally!) and am told that they, too, are produced in-house, I chuckle to myself. As a man of a certain age, it reminds me of the 1970s self-sufficiency movement. Do it yourself. But there’s nothing DIY, at least in an aesthetic sense, about Mara’s portfolio. Mara designs and creates innovative office furniture using metal tubes and sheets, which are bent, cut, rounded and welded
The new automated powder-coating plant is equipped with end filters of the highest efficiency that optimise the production as well as minimise the material waste and energy dissipation
“Everything ultimately comes from a metal tube or a metal sheet,” explains Marchina. “Sometimes, once the product is completed, you can’t believe it’s been made from these elements alone.” Indeed. Mara’s industrial alchemy sees said tubes and sheets bent, cut, rounded and welded into designs that look like they’ve come out of a mould. The result: seating, tables and storage that is relatively light while possessing durability. It also means a minimising of material usage. Less being better. And, true to Mara’s keep-it-local philosophy, any waste is recycled at a facility a mere 10 kilometres from the factory. Mara’s commitment to sustainability and innovation has resulted in a unique and exceptional product line. “We have control over all parts of our industrial process,” says Marchina. “The aim is to control costs, of course, so we can be competitive in the market. And to be as sustainable and circular as possible. But it’s also about having a complete vision. From R&D and prototyping to manufacturing, finishing and shipping.”
“We manufacture on demand,” explains Marchina. “meaning that we aim to deliver, even on large orders for contract, within four weeks. What’s more, our external designers love the fact that they can experiment with us, as everything they need is on site. Including our expert technicians.”
